![]() I tested the old AT cooler (with a water hose), and it did NOT shows signed of leaking from the AT fluid inlet/outlet into the coolant inlet/outlet or vise versa, but I kept the new AT cooler installed anyways. Several "coagulated oil" goop chunks came out with it (mostly from the radiator drain). The drained coolant was thick dark brown in color, like old motor oil. All OEM parts (FCP Euro and BimmerWorld). ![]() I drained the coolant and replaced the cooling system (radiator, hoses, t-stat, water pump, expansion tank/cap, AT cooler, and water pump, plus some other stuff like new belts, p/s fluid drain/fill, water pump pulley, etc.). ![]() THANKS also to Synenergy52's awesome Complete cooling system guide post! That was after driving 4 more months with no problems. I spent a few months watching 50sKid videos (THANK YOU JASON- AWESOME VIDEOS!!!), bought some tools, and made the repairs (with my brother's help!) in April 2019. FYI, quoted repairs from the BMW dealer included changing the radiator, both hoses, water pump, thermostat, AT cooler, and doing a coolant flush and fill and an oil/filter change, for $4,300. BMW dealer suggested it was AT oil leaking into the coolant via the AT oil cooler (at the base of the expansion tank). At the dealership, the upper hose was "wet" looking, and the fluid in the radiator looked brown, oily and thick (no mayonnaise definitely not clear blue or green). Oil in the coolant was discovered in December 2018 (ODO ~124,000) when I took the car into the BMW dealer for a winter checkup. I never looked at the coolant thru the year. I never got any low oil or low coolant indications/lights throughout the year at least 6,000 miles were driven for 12 months with no other indications. I had an oil change at a local garage, but no other work done (nothing was needed). When I got it, I checked all of the fluids and everything looked clean/fresh.ĭrove it through 2018 with no issues. I had an independent mechanic inspect the car prior to purchase, and there were no indications of mechanical problems. It had ~118,000 miles, did not have full maintenance records, and I don't have maintenance/operations history before then. This was previously drained and then filled with BMW coolant (blue!).īasic Data: E46, 2004 330ci convertible, M54 engine, auto-transmission. The coolant fill cap shows engine oil-coolant emulsion (or micro-emulsion).
